STRENGTHEN MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Children are our survival. As such, we must do more to ensure that they grow up healthy, in body as well as in mind. Working with all stakeholders, we can do right by our children and set them up for success no matter where they live in the Des Moines and Polk County. The first place we must start is to address the need for mental health services for youths.

I fully stand behind the efforts of Des Moines public officials, healthcare professionals, teachers and school administrators, and community leaders who have pledged by the end of 2020 to create a team that addresses youth mental health issues.

As Iowa’s largest city, Des Moines desperately needs a youth mobile crisis unit. Also, we must establish a dedicated 24/7 crisis phone line, online resources for parents and youths, and a stabilization center for youths under age 18.
