POTHOLES AND OUR STREETS

Potholes and deteriorating streets plague the city of Des Moines, and the problem is getting worse. On an average year, our Public Works Department crews receive 1,000 calls for pothole fixes; during a bad winter, about 3,500 calls. This past brutal winter they received over 10,000 calls. *

There is repair work planned throughout the city, but our budget cannot stretch enough to keep up with the demand because it first maintains major traffic corridors. This must change! More concrete leading to suburbs will not save our transportation issues.

We must prioritize our Public Works dollars to repair and replace neighborhood streets throughout our city. And we must insist on permanent solutions rather than the all-too-familiar and cost-inefficient temporary patches.
